I am very pleased to be able to share the first story out of the
Vampire Knight novel "Ice blue no Tsumi" (Ice Blue Sins), translated into English! :D
The English translation was done by the talented
Koneko1991 (thank you for all your hard work!!) and then edited and formatted by me. :)
PLEASE READ THE DISCLAIMERS AND IMPORTANT NOTES BELOW BEFORE DOWNLOADING. This translation is not to be taken as absolute fact / canon, it's probably more of a semi-close facsimile thereof. This is for people's enjoyment only - you can consider it a sort of detailed summary or recap if you will. I enjoyed it, so I hope others will too, but don't take it as gospel.
Download story as a PDF The original novel is copyrighted by Matsuri Hino and Ayuna Fujisaki. The pictures belong to Matsuri Hino. If and when the novel becomes officially available in English, please buy it and support the series!!!Important Notes:This is a translation of the first story in the novel,
"Ice blue no Tsumi" (Ice Blue Sins),
only. This is the story about Aido and Fuuka (a girl from the Day Class). The second story from the same book about Zero's past called
"Setsuna no Toki" (A Moment in Time) has unfortunately not yet been translated as far as I know.
Please understand that this copy comes to us via several layers of translation. The original Japanese was translated into Spanish, and then that was translated into English. Naturally, this means that some things may end up literally "lost in translation" LOL. Koneko1991 and I agree that there are some passages, scenes and situations that don't necessarily make perfect sense and occasionally it is difficult to tell who is speaking during a multi-person conversation.
While editing I tried to smooth that out as much as possible, but occasionally I had to leave it a little dubious because I truly wasn't sure how to fix it. This means, of course, that I could have sometimes put the wrong words into the wrong person's mouth, made them act in ways they shouldn't be acting or misconstrued what was intended when re-constructing a sentence or paragraph. So, to anyone who has read the original version, I apologize in advance for any mangling that may have occurred. Likewise, I didn't want to totally re-write every single word, so the sentence structure and way of saying things is a little odd or different sometimes. Please keep in mind that if and when an official translation of the book ever comes out (which I really hope it will!!) it may end up different on some points than this translation, although I believe this copay has the main gist of the plot fully intact.
This is an effort born out of love for the series and the desire to put more VK into the hands of those of us who are sadly lacking multi-lingual skills (like me! XD). It may not be perfect, but hopefully it will give enjoyment to those who have been curious about the novel and want to read a little more about the VK world we love. :)
LOL okay, disclaimers all out of the way, there be
SPOILERS AHEAD...Okay, well, everybody probably already knows the basic plot, but if not, then heed the spoiler warnings. :)
The story was pretty simple, I always wish they made these kind of things more involved, but I know they usually don't. I enjoyed it anyway. :) There was of course entirely too much Fuuka in it for my taste LOL
(if I hadn't been editing it I probably would have skimmed through a lot of her parts XD I'm so bad) but I already expected that would be the case. The book has a lot of Aido in it too though, and that was fun. (would have loved to see more Kaname and Zero, but
*sigh* I know that wasn't the point... ;D)
It was interesting to note that although Aido is obviously capable of being dramatic, flamboyant and a flirt, he's not so good at being deceptive. What I mean is that it seems to me he's actually a very honest person when it comes to what he's feeling, he just has a tendency to be over zealous about it. Actually, that's what's always getting him into trouble, in some ways he's
too honest and
obvious about what he's feeling, hence all the clinging, drooling and scraping over Kaname and his general habit to mouth off.
*giggles*What brings this observation on is that in the story Kain, Aido, Ruka and Ichijo are supposed to befriend Fuuka. They know she is an ex-human, although she doesn't know it yet. The Night Class (mostly Aido (in a science capacity) and Takuma (in an administrative capacity)) are assisting with the work being done on the most recent version of blood tablets which they are hoping will slow or even halt an ex-human's transformation into a vampire, or at least halt their falling to a Level E. (Sadly, it doesn't work.). Anyway, the point is that Kaname wants them to befriend her and look out for her, so they do, but unfortunately Fuuka thinks they're all just interested in her, which is of course not quite the case.
Takuma is his normal cheerful self, and in his defense I do think he was being genuine about it, but he also clearly had firmly in mind the need to not get emotionally involved because they all knew what might happen to Fuuka if the pills didn't work. (I think there's a reason that in the manga it was Takuma and/or Shiki whom Kaname would send out to take care of the Level E's, etc. Judging from the events in the book, they seem to be able to keep very objective about such things, much more like hunters in mentality, whereas Aido... not so much, at least, not after the events in this book.)
Ruka acts very friendly, but it is definitely an act (although I don't think any of them intended to be cruel, they were simply doing what they needed to do. We act nice to people we don't particularly care about all the time in school, work or family situations after all). Kain was pleasant although as always he was kinda quiet most of the time. But Aido... LOL Aido apparently doesn't pull off fake like very well. He was rude and very "I-don't-want-to-be-here" in the beginning. Of course eventually, that ends up changing and he ends up liking Fuuka a lot.
BUT this whole rambling explanation was just to get around to the fact that I think it's cute that if Aido acts like he likes you, you can be pretty sure he actually does, and likewise, if he doesn't like you, you can be sure he'll let you know. XD
The ending was kinda sad, I teared up a little over it (but I'm a sap who cries at just about everything these days). But I must say I liked how Kaname showed both kindness and trust to a (cutely) desperate Aido by letting him take responsibility for Fuuka even though Takuma and Shiki were concerned about it and against the idea. It was also interesting to me (because I love thinking about and exploring minuet details of the VK world) how that situation showed us that even among the nobles there were definite power/authority structures in place. It wasn't just lip-service to say that Takuma was vice president of the dorm, he really was in charge when Kaname wasn't around and he expected Aido to abide by his decisions. Aido might have had to, too, if Kaname hadn't gotten involved. Anyway, I just find all that kind of thing interesting. LOL
Also, I like to consider how this incident obviously changed Aido's views towards ex-humans. The pain he went through over having to end Fuuka's life for her seems to have made him want to push ex-humans away harder, realizing quite painfully that changed humans were not like born vampires. I have to wonder how all that might have affected his attitude towards Zero when he eventually found out about him too. (This all took place the year before VK starts, Yuki and Zero are not part of the Day Class yet).
Actually, given Aido's feelings at the end of the story, after what he had to do, I have these vague bunnies nibbling at me for a small conversation between Aido and Zero sometime (in my universe, after they've become friends). We'll see if it ever weaves itself into a fic someday. :)
OH! LOL must not forget the other thing I liked...
*chuckle* even though we only see Zero and Yuki for a few moments, I love the fact that irritated!Zero is all like: "WHATEVER, I'm going to go wash the dishes" when Cross & Yuki's vampire-friendly sentiments get on his nerves. LOL... I don't know why it amuses me so much, I guess just because storming off to wash the dishes is such a girl thing to do, but for Zero it seems so natural. XD
*makes mental note that she must have him do that sometime when he and Kaname are fighting* ;D
Zero: "Fine. Whatever. I'm going to go wash the dishes."
Kaname: "You can't, Izumi already cleared everything away and they're probably back in the cabinets by now."
Zero: *scowling and grumbling* "Then I'm going to take them out and RE-wash them."
Kaname: "Zero...."
Zero: "What? I want to wash dishes in my own house, is that a crime? Seriously, Kaname, I keep expecting you to hire people to BREATHE for us too..."
Kaname: *deadpan* "They're coming on Tuesday."
OOoookay, wow, seriously off on a tanget there and I have now rambled way too much. XD Anyway, hope you all enjoy the little treat!
